Cultivation tips for Tillandsia
Tempetrature:-
Cool to hot, 10 to
35 degrees Centigrade. Most plants will tolerate low temperatures
down to 5C for short periods, if kept dry. Do not put near a source
of heat eg. above a radiator, fire or on a T.V.
Light:- Good to moderate
light, avoid scorching sun.
Water:- Mist spray
generously, daily. If after 24 hours the surface of the plant is
still very damp especially around the base leaves, then leave for a
further 24 hours before spraying again. In centrally heated houses
continue to spray well in winter, only reduce the water if the
temperature drops below 10 C. Increase the amount of water
accordingly in very hot dry weather. Use rain water or boiled tap
water which has stood at room temperature for at least 4 hours. You
can stand your plant outside in the summer rain. Do not use hard
water for long periods, as it will clog up the trichomes which
absorb the water and nutrients.
Fertilizer:- An air
plant fertiliser spray is available from many Garden Centres
General Care:- Tillandsias like good air circulation but not strong draughts. Good
drainage at the base of the plant is very important. If you want to
attach your plants to a wooden sculpture they are best wired into
place or sat on the natural crevices, making sure that when sprayed
the water will drain away from the base. Avoid using aerosol sprays
or anything with toxic fumes near your plant. Once the plant has
flowered it will produce "Pups" usually around the base leaves. In
time these will form a cluster, if you wish to separate them it is
important to wait until they are well established. |
